Pastor Jewett Short

Rev. Jewett Michael Short, Associate Pastor of Nurturing, Visitation & Witness

Catherine and I have been married for forty-seven years.  Out of this union we have one child, Bryan D. Short, Esq.  He and his wife, Rachel, are owners of a thriving interior design business in Avon, Connecticut where they live.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Delaware State College (now Delaware State University) in 1969. After graduating from college, I was drafted into the U. S. Army. During that time, I did a tour of duty in Viet Nam.  After the Army with the rank of Specialist 4th Class, I held several senior level positions as CFO/treasurer, Cost Accountant, and International Accountant /Liaison Officer for major U. S. Corporations.   In 2008, Catherine and I both earned our Master of Divinity degrees from Palmer Theological Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. (We graduated together).

I attended St. Paul Union African Methodist Episcopal Church located in Wilmington, Delaware when I was a child; however, I stopped attending in my early teens.  I was in my early 30s when I returned worshipping in a different church. One night my life was changed forever.  It was a summer night that we gathered together to spend the night in prayer and fasting.  My life was troubled because I was not living the life as a Christian.  I had some bad life habits not conducive to Godly living.   During that summer night, the song that I learned as a child in Sunday school continued to ring in my head.  The song, “Jesus Loves Me.”  Isn’t it funny how childhood songs come back to memory? The song reminded me and affirmed that Yes, Jesus loves me. Right there and then, I repented of my sinful behavior and asked God for forgiveness.   “Through faith you are saved by Grace.” Immediately, new life begun for me. No, I am not saying that I am perfect, just “moving on to perfection,”  says John Wesley.

The years that followed we continued to worshiped together.  It was those formative years of my Christian experience that my faith and knowledge of God was grounded.  The regular studies of God’s “Word”, daily devotions, and the application of spiritual practices laid the foundation of my Christian experiences. The call to be an Ambassador for Jesus Christ and the love for others were “seeds” planted deeply in my soul by the Holy Spirit.  At the beginning, I resisted the call to be a pastor. One day, I no longer resisted and accepted the call.

In 1990, my wife and I founded and pastored (as team pastors) Faith Home Ministries, Inc., a non-denominational church in Wilmington, Delaware for 20 years. When that assignment was over, our ministerial call was not. We both joined the United Methodist Church. By God’s grace, I pastored Wesley Chapel UMC in Lincoln, Delaware for eight years and shortly thereafter I was appointed here as the Associate Pastor.  (Catherine was hired as the Associate Pastor of St. Paul’s UMC located on Foulk Rd. in Wilmington.)

I am grateful to God for this great opportunity to express to others the love, hope, and the faithfulness of God to me and my family.
