DIMH

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.  Margaret Mead

The Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (Men’s Shelter) is a nonprofit organization of local faith communities concerned with the needs of homeless men in the Greater Dover area.   Every year, Wesley Church serves dinner at the Interfaith Men’s Shelter. We sign up for a week at a time, 2-3 times per year. To help prepare and serve the meal, please contact Gerrie Willis: GerrieW@aol.com , 302-734-5141.

Facts about the shelter:

  • Approximately 150 guests are sheltered each year

  • The shelter can house 33 men at a time

  • Over 500 homeless men have been sheltered since 2008

  • Volunteers (including Wesley UMC) have provided over 12,000 meals

  • Guests have access to employment counseling and other services

  • Approximately 60% of guests leave with full-time employment and access to housing

What is the history of the men’s shelter? The creation of a local men’s shelter began when William Fitzhugh (Wesley UMC’s former minister), Wesley members, Jack & Geri Willis, and other members contacted local churches and created the first Emergency Shelter for Men which was housed at the Salvation Army. It later moved to the House of Pride, and eventually to their new facility in 2008.

How does Wesley help support this mission? Wesley helps by preparing and serving dinners, as well as donating money through the Missions Committee.  Food is prepared for about 40 persons per night.  Volunteers are welcome to stay and have dinner with the men.
